YHKCC students aim high in Hong Kong rugby

Following a difficult period of postponement of sporting fixtures, it has been extremely pleasing to hear the successful stories of many of our current students and alumni in the sport of rugby. We are delighted to announce that Naomi Peeters (5K) and Ruth Ogwu (6K) have been selected for the HKRU Academy in the junior and senior sections.

In July 2021, several students participated in rugby trials for the Hong Kong Rugby Union Academy. The academy is considered an elite level of rugby performance for the students' age grade. The academy aims to follow the pathway to produce a consistent throughput of players capable of playing in the Hong Kong Premiership and for Men’s and Women’s Sevens and Fifteens representative teams.

Students selected to participate in the academy have the opportunity to further develop their rugby skillset, coachability, athleticism, leadership and personal development to elite levels in Hong Kong. They will also have access to excellent training facilities, coaches, medical staff, and nutritionists to support themselves in becoming outstanding performers.

We are excited to share that Naomi Peeters and Ruth Ogwu have been selected for the HKRU Academy in the junior and senior sections.  It was equally impressive to see three of our alumni were selected for the HKRU Academy, namely, Josh Bukowicki (Class of 2020), Juan Escono Oyana (Class of 2020) and Julia Mibuy Oyana (Class of  2021). Furthermore, another alumnus, Anthony Coebergh (Class of 2020), is currently studying in the Netherlands. Anthony has been selected to represent the Dutch Delta squad in the upcoming Rugby Europe Super Cup, which comprises teams from Russia, Georgia, Spain, and Portugal. The Dutch Delta team consists of Dutch qualified elite players under 23 years old and, it’s excellent to see Anthony continuing his rugby success internationally.

The YHKCC rugby team has grown stronger, attaining remarkable success in tournaments in recent years, with many students being crowned with international honours. We would like to express sincere gratitude to our team coaches and all supporting staff in nurturing the students to excel in their rugby talents and also the support and collaboration with HKRU, developing students as outstanding performers.

We wish our HKRU Academy players and Anthony the very best of luck going forward this year, and at YHKCC, we hope to continue to support more students to achieve outstanding level.
